The New Year Zurich Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Zurich, Switzerland. The official name of the event is Neujahrsmarathon Zürich. Around 1,300 athletes participate in the marathon race and other competitions. In 2023, 173 completed marathon, and 497 finished half marathon.

The New Year Zurich Marathon is the first event in the calendar of running events certified by AIMS. The winners of the races, including the national best time, achieve World Athletics/AIMS world leading times as of 1 January. We are the champions, my friend, at least until the next AIMS certified running competition.

The entry fee for the New Year Zurich Marathon is the lowest among all marathons in Switzerland.

In April, you have the opportunity to participate in the Zürich Marathon.

The marathon race, covering a distance of 26.2mi/42.195km, starts at 0:00 on 1 January 2024 (Monday) inside the sports hall «Unterrohr» in Schlieren (Unterrohrstrasse 2, 8952 Schlieren).

Age limit: born in 2008 and earlier.

Half Marathon race, 13.1mi/21.097km

The half marathon race, spanning a distance of 13.1 mi/21.097 km, commences simultaneously with the marathon at 0:00 on 1 January 2024 (Monday) inside the sports hall «Unterrohr» in Schlieren (Unterrohrstrasse 2, 8952 Schlieren).

Age limit: born in 2010 and earlier.

Quarter Marathon race, 6.5mi/10.548km

The quarter marathon race of 6.5mi/10.548km starts together with the marathon at 0:00 on 1 January 2024 (Monday) inside the sports hall «Unterrohr» in Schlieren (Unterrohrstrasse 2, 8952 Schlieren).

Age limit: born in 2014 and earlier.

Entry fee: €31—62 (CHF 30—60).

Course

The course of the New Year Zurich Marathon (Neujahrsmarathon Zürich) 2024 consists of a 6.5mi/10.548km lap (quarter marathon) along the river Limmat.

Depending on the chosen distance, runners complete 1, 2, or 4 laps. At the end of each lap, runners pass through the sports hall “Unterrohr” in Schlieren (Unterrohrstrasse 2, 8952 Schlieren).

The course comprises 90% natural surface and 10% asphalt. There is a total elevation gain of 19 meters per lap.

Kilometer markers are placed at every kilometer along the course.

Please note that the course is not illuminated, so it is recommended to use headlamps.

The time limit for completing the marathon is 5 hours. The last lap must be started no later than at 3:45. The limit may be extended in case of inclement weather.

Water and nutrition stations are situated every 3.1mi/5km along the route and at the finish. Runners have access to warm carbohydrate drinks, energy bars, bananas, energy gel, Coca Cola, and water.

The route of the New Year Zurich Marathon (Neujahrsmarathon Zürich) 2024 is certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Registration

You can sign up for the races of the New Year Zurich Marathon (Neujahrsmarathon Zürich) 2024 online.

Online registration is open until 31 December 2023, or until all slots are filled.

The entry fee for the New Year Zurich Marathon (Neujahrsmarathon Zürich) 2024 varies depending on the date of purchase:
until 31 October 2023 — €62 (CHF 60);
from 1 November to 17 December 2023 — €72 (CHF 70);
18—29 December 2023 — €82 (CHF 80);
30—31 December 2023 (late registration) — €93 (CHF 90).

The entry fee for the New Year Zurich Half Marathon 2024 varies depending on the date of purchase:
until 31 October 2023 — €41 (CHF 40);
from 1 November to 17 December 2023 — €52 (CHF 50);
18—29 December 2023 — €62 (CHF 60);
30—31 December 2023 (late registration) — €72 (CHF 70).

Promotion 1+1: bring a volunteer and start for free! A volunteer can fill out the form with the runner’s information and receive a free entry for a friend.

Your Marathon or Half Marathon Race Entry includes:

  • Bib number
  • Food and beverages stations, toilets along the course and after the race
  • Changing rooms before and after the race
  • Shower after the race
  • Online race results
  • Digital race certificate with indicated finish time
  • Medical aid if necessary
