The Madrid Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Madrid, Spain. The official name of the event is EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½. About 30.000 athletes take part in marathon race and other competitions (7.886 runners completed marathon and 13.834 finished half marathon in 2019).

In 2019 course record of the Madrid Marathon was broken both in men’s and women’s categories: Kenyan Reuben Kerio got the best time in Madrid with 2:08:18 and Ethiopian Shasho Insermu clocked 2:26:24.

In 2020 the Madrid Marathon was cancelled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

Another Madrid Half Marathon is held in April — Movistar Medio Maratón de Madrid, and in October there is a women’s Half Marathon EDP Medio Maratón de la Mujer de Madrid.

Course

A one lap course of the Madrid Marathon (EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½) 2021 tracks along the streets of the Spanish capital, crosses the Manzanares River twice.

Highlights of the course:

  • twin skyscrapers Columbus Towers (Torres de Colón), built from top to bottom in 1976;
  • Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the home stadium of football club Real Madrid;
  • Gate of Europe towers (Puerta de Europa), aka KIO Towers (Torres KIO), 114 m high twin skyscrapers;
  • Cuatro Torres (Four Towers), the tallest skyscrapers in Spain;
  • pedestrian Callao Square (plaza del Callao);
  • Plaza de la Puerta del Sol, the centre (Km 0) of Spanish roads network;
  • Plaza Mayor, a major public space, the centre of Old Madrid;
  • Almudena Cathedral (Santa María la Real de La Almudena), the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid;
  • Royal Palace of Madrid (Palacio Real de Madrid), the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family;
  • Plaza de España, the largest square in the country;
  • Parque del Oeste, a park in Madrid;
  • Temple of Debod (Templo de Debod), an ancient Egyptian temple, donated by the Egyptian state to Spain in 1968 and rebuilt in the Parque del Oeste;
  • Casa de Campo, the largest public park of Madrid, once a royal hunting estate;
  • Madrid Atocha (Estación de Madrid Atocha), the largest railway station in Madrid;

The start for all races of the Madrid Marathon (EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½) 2021 is on one of the longest and widest Madrid avenues Paseo de la Castellana between Ortega y Gasset Street and Marqués de Villamagna Street.

The finish is on Paseo del Prado near Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo and Neptuno Fontain (Fuente de Neptuno).

The Madrid Marathon and Half Marathon 2021 participants are divided into starting blocks according to the expected finish time indicated in the registration form.

The time limit for completing the marathon is 6 hours and 3 hours for the half marathon. Additional limits are applied for certain points of the course.

The pace makers of the Madrid Marathon and Half Marathon (EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½) 2021 provide the necessary pace in order to finish within a certain time. Finish times for marathon are following: 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00 hours. These are half marathon target times: 1:30, 1:40, 1:50, 2:00, 2:15 hours.

11 water and nutrition stations are located on the marathon route, and 3 — on the half marathon route. The stations provide runners with drinking water, Powerade sports drink, fruit, energy gel Maurten. There are water sprinklers on certain points of the course.

Before the start runners may leave their personal belongings from 7:30 till 15:30 26 September 2021 (Sunday) in the deposit area at Paseo de Recoletos, between Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza de Colón. The stuff must be packed in a clear event-issued deposit bag (the bag is included in your Race Pack along with your bib number).

The route of the Madrid Marathon (EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½) 2021 is certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and approved by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (Real Federación Española de Atletismo, RFEA). The marathon is one of the World Athletics Gold Label Road Races.

Registration

You may sign up for races of the Madrid Marathon (EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½) 2021 online.

The online registration is open till 31 August 2021 or till the slots last.

You must register by 31 August 2021 to get your name on your bib number.

The entry fee for the Madrid Marathon (EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½) 2021 varies depending on the date of purchase:
till 30 November 2020 — €50;
1—31 December 2020 — €60;
from 1 January till 31 April 2021 — €75;
from 1 May till 31 August 2021 — €90.

The cost of the one day license of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (Real Federación Española de Atletismo) — €5 is added to the entry fee unless you own the license or the card Corredor Plus.

The entry fee for the Madrid Half Marathon 2021 varies depending on the date of purchase:
till 30 November 2020 — €26;
1—31 December 2020 — €30;
from 1 January till 31 April 2021 — €40;
from 1 May till 31 August 2021 — €50.

The cost of the one day license of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (Real Federación Española de Atletismo) — €3 is added to the entry fee unless you own the license or the card Corredor Plus.

You may switch to another distance (with surcharge if applicable) online till 31 August 2021. You may transfer your registration to other runner online till 15 August 2021. More info is here.

You may cancel your registration in case of illness or injury and get 90% refund of the entry fee, if you present a medical certificate before 15 August 2021. More info is here.

No health certificate is required to enter any race of the Madrid Marathon (EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Maratón & ½) 2021.
