The Berlin Half Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Berlin, Germany. The official name of the event is Generali Berliner Halbmarathon. About 37.000 athletes take part in half marathon race and other competitions (28.460 completed half marathon in 2019, 23 finishers were over 80 years old).

In 2019 Berlin Half Marathon course record in women’s category was broken: Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands achieved 1:05:45.

SCC Events, Berlin Half Marathon organizer, also conducts BMW Berlin-Marathon in September.

In 2020 the Berlin Half Marathon was cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus.

The Berlin Half Marathon is of high demand. The participant limit 2019 was reached in November.

Course

The one lap course of the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021 tracks over central Berlin districts, it goes through the Tiergarten Park (Großer Tiergarten), which is 210 hectares in size, and through Lietzenseepark with the lake of same name. The route traverses the Landwehrkanal twice, and also twice crosses the canal Kupfergraben, the part of the Spree River, as it passes the Spreeinsel Island, the northern half of this island is called Museum Island (Museumsinsel), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Highlights of the course:

  • Victory Column (Siegessäule), erected in 19 century to commemorate victories in the so-called unification wars, is 67 m tall and has a viewing platform;
  • Charlottenburg Palace (Schloss Charlottenburg), the Baroque royal residence;
  • Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Gedächtniskirche, a Protestant church in the centre of the Breitscheidplatz;
  • Potsdamer Platz, an important public square and traffic intersection in central Berlin;
  • Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor), an 18th-century neoclassical monument, participants run through the gate just before the finish line.

Start and finish for all races of the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021 is in the Tiergarten Park (Großer Tiergarten) at Straße des 17. Juni between the Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) and the Victory Column (Siegessäule).

The Berlin Half Marathon 2021 participants are divided into starting waves and blocks according to the results of the previous races.

The starting block is indicated on the bib number. You may start from the slower block.

Time limit for completing the half marathon is 3 hours 15 minutes.

The pace makers of the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021 provide the necessary pace in order to finish within a certain time. The pace makers can be recognized by flags marked with the corresponding finish time. Target times for half marathon are 1:25, 1:35, 1:45, 2:00, 2:15 hours.

Water and nutrition stations are at the km 5, 10, 14, 17 of the course and at the finish line. The stations provide runners with water, isotonic drink ultraSPORTS, energy gel and bar, Cola, fruit, alcohol-free beer Erdinger.

While registering you need to choose option: Bag drop-off or Poncho (warming and reusable thermal cover after the finish). If your choice is Bag drop-off you DO NOT get a poncho. Instead 22 August 2021 (Sunday) you may leave your personal belongings in the baggage deposit area near the start zone. The stuff must be packed in the transparent deposit bag (it is included in your Race Pack along with your bib number and a sticker). The bag is to be marked with the sticker that has your race number on it. To pick up your bag after the race (till 15:00 22 August 2021) you need to show your bib number.

You may choose one of the 3 modes of online tracking of your progress along the course:

  • “Public” — anyone can follow you via the results page,
  • “Code” — you will receive a code that you can share with your supporters so they can see where you are at all times,
  • “Private” — you do not want to be tracked.

The route of the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021 is certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races AIMS. The event is one of the World Athletics Bronze Label Road Races.

Registration

You may sign up for the races of the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021 online.

The online registration is open till 28 July 2021 or till the slots last.

The entry fee for the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021 varies depending on the number of entries:
from 1 to 2.100 entries (Early Bird) — 48 €,
from 2.001 to 15.000 entries —55 €,
from 15.001 to 35.000 entries — 65 €.

Time measurement at the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021 is done exclusively with the ChampionChip (a small plastic transponder that is to be fastened on your running shoe and measures your personal race time).

You need either to rent a chip (6 €) or to buy it (31 €). The purchased chip can be used for many different running, cycling or triathlon events worldwide.

If you don’t return the rented chip till 15:00 22 August 2021 you will be charged additional 25 € and the chip will be yours.

You may do a free medical check- up at the Berlin Half Marathon Expo 2021, former Berlin Tempelhof Airport (Tempelhofer Flughafen, Platz der Luftbrücke 5, 12101 Berlin) 20—21 August 2021. When the doctor advises against your participation you are eligible for a voucher for a share of the entry fee, as you give back your bib number 2021. The voucher is valid only for the next year Berlin Half Marathon.

Your Half Marathon Race Entry includes:

20 August 2021 (Friday) from 11:00 till 20:00,
21 August 2021 (Saturday) from 9:00 till 18:30.

You need to pick-up your Race Pack in person. To get your Race Pack you should show your ID with photo (passport) and your print-out start card (Startpass) (sent via e-mail in March).

No health certificate is required to enter any race of the Berlin Half Marathon (Generali Berliner Halbmarathon) 2021.
