The Malta Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Malta. The official name of the event is GiG Malta Marathon. About 5.000 athletes take part in marathon race and other competitions (862 completed marathon and 2.993 finished half marathon in 2020).

The first Malta Marathon was held in 1986.

In 2019 Malta Marathon was cancelled due to severe storm, rare for the mild climate of the island.

The marathon race of 26.2mi/42.195km starts at 7:30 28 February 2021 (Sunday) near the Main Gate of Mdina.

The Half Marathon race of 13.1mi/21.097km starts at 9:15 28 February 2021 (Sunday) near the Main Gate of Mdina.

Course

The course of the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) 2021 descends to the Mediterranean coast from the mountains with a height drop of 200 m from start to finish.

The route is marked with a thin yellow line on junctions.

The routes of the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) 2021 are not traffic free for the time of races!

The course of the Malta Half Marathon 2021 partly coincides with the marathon route.

Start for all the races of the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) 2021 is near the Main Gate of Mdina, historic capital of the island.

The finish is close to the Ferries in Sliema, Malta’s touristic capital.

Time limit for completing the marathon is 5 hours and 30 minutes, for the half marathon distance — 3 hours (3 hours and 45 minutes for walkers). Additional limits are applied for certain points of the course.

Water and nutrition stations are located approximately every 5km of the route. The stations provide runners with drinking water, isotonic drink Powerade, fruit, water for sponges. Finishers get isotonic drink, water San Michel, fruit.

Before the start 28 February 2021 (Sunday) you may leave your personal belongings in the baggage vans near the start zone in Mdina. The stuff must be packed in an event-issued deposit bag (the bag is included in your Race Pack along with your bib number). Participants may retrieve their checked bags after the finish in Sliema.

You may book morning transfer to the start from Sliema (the finish zone near the Ferries) for 5 €. Transfer buses leave at 6:00 (for marathon) and at 7:45 (for half marathon) 28 February 2021 (Sunday).

The route of the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) 2021 is not certified according to international standards, race results are not qualifying for other competitions.

Registration

You may sign up for races of the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) 2021 online.

The online registration is open from 1 October 2020 till 15 January 2021 or till the slots last.

The entry fee for the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) or Half Marathon 2021 varies depending on the date of purchase:
from 1 October 2020 till 31 December 2020 — 35 €;
1—15 January 2021 — 45 €;
from 15 January 2021 (if slots are available) — 55 €.

You may participate in team competition if you mark your team while registering.

Your Marathon or Half Marathon Race Entry includes:

  • Bib number with time measuring chip
  • Safety pins to attach your bib number

  • Bag deposit and transfer from start to finish
  • Food and beverages stations, toilets along the course and after the race
  • Music and performance groups along the course

  • Medical aid if necessary

You may pick up the Race Pack with your bib number in the Registration Office of the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) 2021 at Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa (39, Main Street, Balluta Bay, St. Julians STJ1017).
Pick-up desks schedule:
25 February 2021 (Thursday) from 19:00 till 21:30,
26 February 2021 (Friday) from 18:00 till 21:30,
27 February 2021 (Saturday) from 16:00 till 21:30.

You may get your Race Pack earlier 20 and 21, 23 and 24 February 2021 at Intersport, sporting goods retailer, in Qormi (near Lidl and Park & Ride) or in Silema (Piazzetta).

To get your Race Pack you should name the ID number indicated in the application form.

You may authorize another person to collect your Race Pack. The collecting person needs to name the ID number indicated in your application form.

No health certificate is required to enter any race of the Malta Marathon (GiG Malta Marathon) 2021.
