The Surf City Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Huntington Beach, state of California, USA. The official name of the event is Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon. About 14.000 athletes take part in marathon race and other competitions (1.350 runners completed marathon and 9.458 finished half marathon in 2020).

Till 2008, the Surf City Marathon was known as the Pacific Shoreline Marathon.

The Surf City Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier.

Marathon race, 26.2mi/42.195km (Surf City Marathon)

The marathon race of 26.2mi/42.195km starts at 6:30 7 February 2021 (Sunday) from the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street in Huntington Beach.

Age limit: from 18 years old on the race date.

Half Marathon race, 13.1mi/21.097km (Surf City Half Marathon)

The half marathon race of 13.1mi/21.097km starts at 7:45 7 February 2021 (Sunday) from the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street in Huntington Beach.

Age limit: from 13 years old on the race date.

3.1mi/5km Race (5K)

The 3.1mi/5km race starts at 7:00 7 February 2021 (Sunday) from the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street in Huntington Beach.

No age limit.

Course

The course of the Surf City Marathon 2021 is mostly oceanfront; it passes by the Huntington Beach pier, tracks through the streets of Huntington Beach and Huntington Central Park, near the Bolsa Chica State Ecological Reserve.

The course of the Surf City Half Marathon 2021 coincides with part of the marathon route.

Start and finish for all races of the Surf City Marathon 2021 is at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street in Huntington Beach.

The Surf City Half Marathon 2021 participants start in waves with 2-3 minute intervals. Waves are self-seeded based on your expected pace and finish time.

The time limit for completing the marathon is 6 hours, for the half marathon distance — 4 hours 30 minutes.

The pace makers of the Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon 2021 provide the necessary pace in order to finish within a certain time. Goal finish times for marathon are following: 3:05, 3:15, 3:30, 3:40, 3:50, 4:05, 4:20, 4:35, 4:50, 5:00, 5:20 hours. These are half marathon target times: 1:30, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55, 2:00, 2:10, 2:15, 2:20, 2:30 hours.

Water and nutrition stations are located approximately every 1-2 mile of the route, and at the finish. The stations provide runners with drinking water, Nuun sports drink, Honey Stinger energy gel. Finishers get beverages, snacks and beer.

Before the start 7 February 2021 (Sunday), you may leave your personal belongings near the Start Line and the primary expo tent, located adjacent to the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street in Huntington Beach. The stuff must be packed in a clear event-issued deposit bag. The bag is included in your Race Pack along with your bib number.

The route of the Surf City Marathon 2021 is certified by the Road Running Technical Council of USA Track & Field (USATF).

Registration

You may sign up for races of the Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon 2021 online.

The Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon 2021 entry fee:
from $99 marathon,
from $89 half marathon.

The entry fee may increase as the race date approach.

You may sign up for Surf City Virtual Races (option for marathon, half marathon).

Discounts for team registration (20+ members) are available.

If you finish Cowabunga Beach Mile 6 February 2021 (Saturday) and any of Sunday races you get additional Cowabunga Challenge medal.

Beginning 24 January 2021 for a fee of $10, you may online switch your entry to the virtual. More info is here.

You may switch to another distance (with surcharge if applicable) online for free till 29 January 2021 or at the Expo for $10 fee.

Till 4 February 2021 for a fee of $25, you may transfer online your registration to another person. No later than 24 January 2021, you may defer your entry to the next year event for an administration fee of 50% of the entry fee. More info is here.

You may pick up the Race Pack with your bib number at the Active Lifestyle Expo of the Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon 2021, located in Huntington Beach Parking Lots (21291 Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington Beach, CA 92648).
Pick-up desks schedule:
5 February 2021 (Friday) from 13:00 till 19:00,
6 February 2021 (Saturday) from 10:00 till 16:00,
7 February 2021 (Sunday) on race day from 6:00 — with special reservation (for $25).

To get your Race Pack you should show your ID with photo and emailed QR code.

You may online authorize another person to collect your Race Pack. A proxy can pick up packs for up to 3 people.

No health certificate is required to enter any race of the Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon 2021.
