The Melbourne Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Melbourne, Australia. The official name of the event is Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival. About 30.000 athletes take part in marathon race and other competitions (7.026 runners completed marathon and 10.200 finished half marathon in 2019).

Melbourne staged its inaugural marathon in 1978, the first Melbourne Half Marathon was held in 1992.

The Melbourne Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier.

In 2020 the Melbourne Marathon Festival was cancelled as an in-person event due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Virtual races were held instead in December 2020.

Events and Activities

Marathon race, 26.2mi/42.195km (Nike Melbourne Marathon)

The marathon race of 26.2mi/42.195km starts at 6:00 12 December 2021 (Sunday) from Batman Avenue (150m north of Rod Laver Arena).

Age limit: at least 18 years old on race date.

Half Marathon race, 13.1mi/21.097km (Nike Half Marathon)

The half marathon race of 13.1mi/21.097km starts at 7:00 12 December 2021 (Sunday) from Batman Avenue (150m north of Rod Laver Arena).

Age limit: at least 16 years old on race date.

6.2mi/10km Race (SriLankan Airlines 10km Run)

The 6.2mi/10km race starts at 15:00 11 December 2021 (Saturday) from Yarra Park Path parallel to Jolimont Station.

No age limit. Children under the age of 13 on event day must be accompanied by an adult (with an entry fee).

Entry fee: from €52 (AUD 80) for adults, from €36 (AUD 55) for children under 17 years old.

3.1mi/5km Race (5KM Run)

The 3.1mi/5km race starts at 17:00 11 December 2021 (Saturday) from Yarra Park Path parallel to Jolimont Station.

No age limit. Children under the age of 13 on event day must be accompanied by an adult (with an entry fee).

Entry fee: from €39 (AUD 60) for adults, from €26 (AUD 40) for children under 17 years old.

Course

The course of the Melbourne Marathon (Nike Melbourne Marathon) 2021 tracks through streets and parks of the capital of the Australian state of Victoria. The route crosses the Yarra River over Princes Bridge, built in 1888, it runs around Albert Park Lake and along the shores of Port Phillip Bay.

The start of the Melbourne Marathon and Half Marathon 2021 is on Batman Avenue,150m north of Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne Park.

The finish line of all the races of Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival 2021 is inside the sports stadium Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) located in Yarra Park of Melbourne.

The time limit for completing the marathon is 7 hours, for the half marathon distance — 6 hours. Additional limits are applied for certain points of the course. The finish closes at 13:00.

The pace makers of the Melbourne Marathon (Nike Melbourne Marathon) and Half Marathon (Nike Half Marathon) 2021 provide the necessary pace in order to finish within a certain time. The pace makers can be identified by the event gear marked with the corresponding finish time. Finish times for marathon are following: 2:50, 3:00, 3:10, 3:20, 3:30, 3:40, 3:50, 4:00, 4:10, 4:20, 4:30 hours. These are half marathon target times: 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 2:00, 2:10, 2:20 hours.

11 water and nutrition stations are located at the marathon route and 5 at the half marathon route. The stations provide runners with drinking water, SiS Sports Drink.

The routes of the Melbourne Marathon (Nike Melbourne Marathon) and Half Marathon (Nike Half Marathon) 2021 are certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Registration

You may sign up for races of Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival 2021 online.

The online registration is open till 21 November 2021 or till the slots last.

The entry fee for the Melbourne Marathon (Nike Melbourne Marathon) 2021 increases from €107 (AUD 165) as the race date approaches.
The entry fee for the Melbourne Half Marathon (Nike Half Marathon) 2021 increases from €88 (AUD 135) as the race date approaches.

You may participate in team competition if you mark your team of minimum 5 people while registering or after.

You may switch to another distance online up until 4 December 2021 or later in person at the Race Week Office.

If the event is cancelled due to COVID-19 or you are unable to participate due to COVID-19 concerns, you get entry fee refund or entry deferral to next year. More info is here.
