The Helsinki Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Helsinki, Finland. The official name of the marathon is Helsinki City Marathon, of the event — Helsinki City Running Day. About 10.500 athletes take part in marathon race and other competitions (1.367 runners completed marathon and 3.370 finished half marathon in 2020).

79 runners gained Helsinki City Double medals during Helsinki City Running Day 2020 for completing 2 distances: half marathon and marathon.

Helsinki Half Marathon is held in June, and in August you may run another Helsinki Marathon together with Half Marathon.

The marathon race of 26.2mi/42.195km starts at 14:30 and 14:40 15 May 2021 (Saturday) from Mäntymäentie street, next to Paavo Nurmi statue.

Half Marathon race, 13.1mi/21.097km (Helsinki City Run puolimarathon)

The half marathon race of 13.1mi/21.097km starts from 11:00 15 May 2021 (Saturday) from Mäntymäentie street, next to Paavo Nurmi statue.

No age limit.

Double race for half marathon distance of 13.1mi/21.097km and marathon distance of 26.2mi/42.195km (Helsinki City Double)

Double race runners finish half marathon (for less than 3 hours), then run marathon — 39.3mi/63.3km in one day 15 May 2021 (Saturday).

Age limit: at least 18 years old on 31 December 2021.

Course

The course of the Helsinki Marathon (Helsinki City Marathon) 2021 is made of two laps: the first one is longer, it has approximately 5mi/8km loop in the Southern end of the city. The route tracks through streets of Helsinki, around the bay Seurasaarenselkä, along the shore of the bay Töölönlahti.

The start for the Helsinki Marathon (Helsinki City Marathon) and Helsinki Half Marathon (Helsinki City Run puolimarathon) 2021 is at Mäntymäentie Street, next to the statue of Paavo Nurmi, who was called the “Flying Finn“, as he dominated distance running in the early 20th century.

The finish is at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium (Helsingin olympiastadion, Paavo Nurmen tie 1), reopened in 2020 after renovation.

The Helsinki Marathon (Helsinki City Marathon) and Half Marathon (Helsinki City Run puolimarathon) 2021 participants are divided into starting blocks according to the results of the previous races. The starting block is indicated on the bib number.

The time limit for completing the marathon is 6 hours and 3 hours for the half marathon.

The pace makers of the Helsinki Marathon (Helsinki City Marathon) 2021 provide the necessary pace in order to finish within a certain time. The pace makers can be recognized by their colored vests and flags marked with the corresponding finish time. Target times for marathon are 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00, 5:30 hours.

14 water and nutrition stations are located on the marathon route and 5 on the half marathon route. The stations provide runners with drinking water, No Limits sports drink, energy gel, salty pickled cucumbers, raisins.

Before the start, you may leave your personal belongings from 9:00 till 20:45 15 May 2021 (Saturday) in the deposit area at the Olympic Stadium northern market square (Pohjoinen Stadionintori). The bag drop is divided by the events: marathon is on the eastern side, half marathon on the western side. The stuff must be packed in a deposit bag, you should attach to your bag a sticker that has your race number on it. The sticker and the bag (54х60 cm) are included in your Race Pack along with your bib number. There is a storage service for valuables (phone, money, watch etc.) at the Olympic Stadium (Helsingin olympiastadion, Paavo Nurmen tie 1). The cost of the storage is €5.

The route of the Helsinki Marathon (Helsinki City Marathon) and Half Marathon (Helsinki City Run puolimarathon) 2021 is certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

You may sign up for races of the Helsinki City Running Day 2021 online.

If slots are available you may sign up for the races 14—15 May 2021 (Friday and Saturday, including race day) at the Race Office of the Helsinki City Running Day 2021 at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium (Helsingin olympiastadion, Paavo Nurmen tie 1).

The entry fee for the Helsinki Marathon (Helsinki City Marathon) 2021 varies depending on the date of purchase:
5—31 October 2020 — €61;
1—30 November 2020 — €71.
The entry fee increases as the race day approaches.

The entry fee for the Helsinki Half Marathon (Helsinki City Run puolimarathon) 2021 varies depending on the date of purchase:
5—31 October 2020 — €44;
1—30 November 2020 — €52.
The entry fee increases as the race day approaches.

You may transfer your registration to another person (for a fee of €10) or switch to another distance (with surcharge if applicable). More info is here.

Pick-up desks schedule:
14 May 2021 (Friday) from 8:00 till 20:00,
15 May 2021 (Saturday) on race day from 8:00 till 10:00 (for half marathon runners), till 13:30 (for marathon runners).

To get your Race Pack you should show your ID with photo, confirmation letter.

You may authorize another person to collect your Race Pack. The collecting person needs to present your confirmation letter.

No health certificate is required to enter any race of the Helsinki City Running Day 2021.
