The Zermatt Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in Zermatt, Switzerland. The official name of the event is Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon. About 2.500 athletes take part in marathon race and other competitions (615 runners completed marathon and 900 finished half marathon in 2019).

The finish of the Zermatt Marathon is located at the highest altitude among European races — 2.585 m above sea level.

In 2020 the Zermatt Marathon was cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus.

Course

The course of the Zermatt Marathon (Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon) 2021 tracks through the picturesque valley of the Pennine Alps, along the left bank of the river Vispa, on alpine roads, through pine forests and alpine pastures of Sunnegga Mountain.

Most of the route is on natural surface trail, part is on asphalt road.

Total ascent of the marathon course is 1.944 m, total descend is 444 m.

Time limit for completing the marathon is 7 hours 15 minutes, for the half marathon distance — 5 hours 30 minutes. Additional limits are applied for certain points of the course.

10 water and nutrition stations are located on the marathon route, and 5 — on the half marathon route. The stations provide runners with drinking water, isotonic drink, energy gel PowerGel, Power Bar carbohydrate bar, Cola, fruit, tea, bouillon.

Before the start, participants (marathon, ultra marathon, relay) may leave their personal belongings in the deposit area at St. Niklaus village near the start line till 8:15 3 July 2021 (Saturday). Half marathon runners may deposit their stuff at Zermatt village, close to Bahnhof Hotel (Bahnhofsplatz 54) till 9:45. The stuff must be packed in a deposit bag (the bag is included in your Race Pack along with your bib number). Valuables can be left in mini-safes at the specific Secure Deposit area near the start line.

The bags are transported to the finishing area at Riffelberg; you may pick up your bag till 17:30. The unclaimed bags can be collected at the information desk on the Railway Station Square in Zermatt from 20:00.

You may change and have shower till 17:00 in Riffelberg (finish area) or in the school at the starting area (Schulhaus, 3924 St. Niklaus).

Your supporters may follow you on the train „Terraces on the move“ for the part of the route from St. Niklaus to Zermatt.

The route of the Zermatt Marathon (Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon) 2021 is certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Registration

You may sign up for races of the Zermatt Marathon (Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon) 2021 online.

The online registration is open till the slots last.

The entry fee for the Zermatt Marathon (Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon) 2021 is €110 (CHF 125).

The entry fee for the Zermatt Half Marathon (Gornergrat Zermatt Halbmarathon) 2021 is €85 (CHF 95).

The time of the runner is measured by reusable electronic chip. Chip is to be returned after the race. If you don’t return the chip after the race you will be charged additional €47 (CHF 50).

Till 18 June 2021 for a fee of €20 (CHF 20) you may transfer your race registration to another person. Here is online exchange service.

Half marathon runners can pick up their Race Packs 3 July 2021 (Saturday), on race day from 9:45 at the info-point on Bahnhofsplatz in Zermatt.

To get your Race Pack you should show your ID with photo, your confirmation letter (sent via email).

No health certificate is required to enter any race of the Zermatt Marathon (Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon) 2021.
